The Adventures of John Lilley

One-on-0ne Guitar Lessons in the Philadelphia area

“I will make you a better guitar player.......that’s a promise!”

Teaching guitar has always been a passion of mine, and I welcome sharing my knowledge with others. If you have a basic understanding and want to take what you’ve been doing to the next level… if you have "hit the wall"… I can help you look at things from another point of view, and become a BETTER GUITAR PLAYER.

A few years ago, I began teaching private guitar lessons again in the West Chester area between my touring and studio dates. It’s been incredibly gratifying to see my students write songs, record in their studios, produce demos/CDs, or work towards furthering their performance goals.

Students contact me when they’ve
“hit the wall” and are repeating the same tired old things in their playing over and over again.

Core concepts in my teaching:

-Understanding the mechanics of music theory and guitar technique

-All the tricks n' licks of the trade

-All the rules, all the concepts underlying the rules,

and the fun part - when to break the rules!

Together we will discover and build on your strengths, and uncover and overcome your weaknesses. Each lesson is personalized for you.

I will also make a DVD of your lessons so you can play along with me, see where my hands go, and I can talk you through each lesson every week.

It's amazing to watch a student make a breakthrough, and to see the light bulb go on as we work together. My students become better musicians: learning, understanding and exploring new ways to play.

Let’s talk about where you are now and where you’d like to be. All conversations are welcome.

If you or anyone you know wanna take your guitar playing to the next level, then John Lilley is the man to help you. He's taught me so much about the how's and why's of guitar playing and is constantly taking me to that next level to be a better player and musician, not only playing but also understanding what im playing. He's the reason im confident about my big Vegas show!

Hi John,
Scott Martin commented on your link.
Scott wrote: "John is a great teacher and really amazing at figuring out a student's style, ability, and gaps to get to the next level. I've noticed a subtle but at the same time massive shift in my approach to playing, from chord voicing, positional playing, an improved ear...just a bunch of little shifts that add up to a more confident player (and I first started on classical guitar when I was eight). I reached a point where I thought I was far enough along to get by, and then life happened and basically didn't play for 20 years. John brought me back."
Great lesson today. I always appreciate the mix of theory and application with the sprinkling of "ah ha" or in my case "duh" moments but what I really dig are the performance-oriented tips, tricks and general stage advice (like how to play nice with others). Cheers, and see you at the ITP show!

"Being taught music by the American guitar master John Lilley is such an inspiring part of my life these days. Sitting down with my guitar with him is literally going to the musical well of knowledge. You know, he got to play guitar with Doc Watson as a child....How cool is that!"
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge John!
Bill Kerns, longtime student:
If you know Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Escalator of Life, All You Zombies, And We Danced, etc. then you know John Lilley. He's played Live Aid, The Wall in Berlin w/ Roger Waters, and countless tours all over the world. He is a great teacher. You will learn how to play any style (trust me, I'm all over the place) and, more importantly, you will learn the "whys". He totally changed how I approach the guitar and it's always a good hang. I'm lucky I get to learn from him and now you can be lucky too. And he didn't pay me to write this. (But I do accept Paypal).

David Fiorenza student on Linkedin:
"John is the best guitar teacher I have ever had.
He opened up my skills to areas I never thought I would achieve for performing, writing and my confidence.
He also taught me about discipline in the guitar lessons, theory and the ability to perform lead guitar solos."
